John J. Berger is an environmental science and policy specialist, prize-winning author of 11 books, journalist, and environmental consultant. He has worked for the [https://tethys.pnnl.gov/organization/national-research-council-national-academies-nrc National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences], Fortune 500 corporations such as Chevron, nonprofit groups such as Friends of the Earth, and governmental organizations, including the Office of Technology Assessment of the United States Congress. Berger co-founded and directed the [https://www.nirs.org/ Nuclear Information and Resource Service] and founded and directed the Restoring the Earth organization. He was a visiting professor at University of Maryland, and has served as a consultant to corporations, utilities, and foundations. His articles have been published by Scientific American, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, USA Today Magazine, Resilience, LA Progressive, and Countercurrents. The American clean power industry is thriving and making a significant contribution to the U.S. economy thanks to policies of the [https://www.salon.com/topic/joe_biden Biden]-Harris administration, as well as the highly competitive prices and speed with which clean power systems and energy storage can be currently installed. But the industry is now facing an [https://www.salon.com/2025/06/30/existential-risk-trumps-bill-could-raise-energy-costs-lose-900k-us-jobs/ all-out assault] from President [https://www.salon.com/topic/donald_trump Donald Trump]. His signature “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which Trump [https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/07/04/trump-bbb-bill-signing/ signed into law] on July 4, 2025, heavily targets the industry, which Trump has labeled the “green new scam.” The legislation [https://www.canarymedia.com/articles/policy-regulation/senates-big-beautiful-bill-would-be-a-disaster-for-clean-energy eliminates] a 30 percent tax credit for residential rooftop solar panels by the end of 2025, as well as those dedicated to utility-scale solar and wind, although plants that are already financed and approved by June 2026—or that are operational by 2027—can still qualify for the credits. (The credit for solar leasing companies will also last through 2027 and can be passed through to consumers.) The bill also eliminates tax credits for electric vehicles and chargers, as well as battery storage systems, geothermal heating, electric panel upgrades, energy audits and weatherization, all of which can lower consumer’s energy bills.

While April and May are usually the hottest months in many countries in Southeast Asia, hundreds of millions of people are now suffering in South Asia from an exceptionally intense heat wave that has killed hundreds. One expert has already called it the most extreme heat event in history. Record-breaking temperatures above 122º F were reported in the Indian capital of New Delhi and temperatures sizzled to an unheard of 127º F in parts of India and Pakistan. Nor was the blazing heat limited to Asia. Heat waves of exceptional severity and duration are now occurring simultaneously in many areas of the world. Mexico and parts of the United States, notably Miami and Phoenix, have recently been in the grip of intense heat events. In southern Mexico, endangered howler monkeys in several states have been falling dead from trees in their tropical forests due to heat stroke and dehydration. Below-average rainfall throughout Mexico has led to water shortages in Mexico City and elsewhere. In some places, birds and bats, not to speak of humans, are also dying from the heat.
