As a nationwide phenomenon, environmental racism occurs when low-income people of color are disproportionately exposed to pollution due to the neighborhoods they are forced to live in. An insidious contributor to environmental racism in Tennessee is the presence of military bases. These installations are major pollution sources, and those living close to military bases are often people of color with limited financial resources.
