* This field determines the alphabetical order to display Authors in some contexts, such as in lists.
* Always fill in the “Sort As” field with the Author’s '''last name, comma first name (and middle name/initial/suffix or roman numeral if applicable'''), as in an index or some books’ bibliographies.
* If the Author’s name contains special characters (such as an accented letter such as é or â or ç, an umlaut such as ö or ï, or a character i like ı, etc.), fill in the Sort As field with the letter presented in its standard way (for example, the name '''Ayşe Gürsöz''' becomes in the Sort As field: '''Gursoz, Ayse''').
* If the Author has an academic degree abbreviation that must appear after their name in their byline (inadvisable by Observatory house style), remove it in the Sort As field (for example, the name '''Jane L. Smith, PhD''', becomes '''Smith, Jane L.''' in the Sort As field).
* The first letter of a Sort As field should always be capitalized; using a lowercase first letter will make the name be sorted out of order (for example, the name '''Elsa van Buren''' becomes '''Van Buren, Elsa''' in the Sort As field, and ''not'' van Buren, Elsa).
