Introduction

Before the Pyramids and the grandeur of Memphis, there was Thinis. 5,000 years ago, as the warring factions of the Nile were forged into a single nation, this city served as the first seat of pharaonic power. Yet, this birthplace of the Egyptian state has vanished into the sands at the heart of the Old Kingdom. Our investigation follows the trail of royal cemeteries of Abydos and satellite imagery, probing the floodplains for mud-brick foundations of a city.
