A lecture by Valérie Delattre, archaeo-anthropologist at the Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives (Inrap), on perinatal death and the place of infants in ancient societies. Delattre examines how communities from antiquity through the eighteenth century devised ritual and practical strategies to cope with infant loss — at a time when a quarter of children died at birth and another quarter did not survive weaning — as revealed through funerary archaeology. Hosted at the Paléosite in Saint-Césaire, the lecture is free and open to the public.
