Lecture, Dr. Katharina Rieger: Sanctuaries in the Economic Area. Small sacred sites in the Palmyrene as sites of economic negotiation processes
In the area surrounding the ancient oasis city of Palmyra, there are numerous small sanctuaries in settlement contexts. Many of the sculptures used to illustrate archaeology „Palmyrene religion“ come from these sacred buildings, which are often architecturally simple, as they depict numerous deities; in addition, there are objects with inscriptions in various scripts and languages.
The lecture not only considers these sanctuaries as places of religious activity, but also attempts to integrate them into economic practices in the steppe region around the oasis of Palmyra. The focus is on mobile lifestyles, resource management and the distribution of goods – economic transactions, and on the role of the sacred places and deities that are involved in these negotiation processes by the human actors.Key Speaker: Katharina Rieger
