Gain an introduction to the ancient language of Sanskrit at this four-week course delivered at the British Museum in partnership with City Lit.

Sanskrit is the sacred language of Hinduism, the language of classical Hindu philosophy and of historical texts of Buddhism and Jainism. It relates to other languages in ancient and medieval South and South-Eastern Asia.

Join tutor Dr Maddalena Italia and learn to read simple and widely occurring texts in Sanskrit, while gaining an insight into related classical cultures. The course will explore how the script works and will include basic vocabulary and grammar. Students will discover how this linguistic invention had such a major impact on societal development, the historical record and various Asian languages. Studying objects in the British Museum which bear inscriptions in Sanskrit will be a major part of the course.
