Before 586 BC, wrote Fontenrose[1] (1988: p. 124), “the only Pythian contests were musical. The hymn to Apollo was sung to the accompaniment of the kithara (lyre) played by the singer; and it was said that Hesiod was not allowed to compete because he had not learned to play the kithara.”
