More about this author

Marilyn Kroplick is president and executive director of In Defense of Animals. A board-certified psychiatrist and award-winning socio-political photographer, she has led the organization since 2011, spearheading campaigns to end the dog meat trade, protect elephants, strengthen animal cruelty laws, and rescue animals in need around the world.

Dr. Kroplick also developed a groundbreaking mentorship and support program for animal activists that recognizes the deep connection between human wellbeing and sustainable advocacy for animals.

Her commitment to animal rights began in 2002 after purchasing a sick puppy from a pet store. The experience led her to uncover the abusive puppy mill pipeline supplying the store, ultimately helping expose the operation and shut the business down.

Drawing on her background in psychiatry, leadership, and activism, Dr. Kroplick works to build a more compassionate, resilient, and inclusive movement for animal liberation.

We're thrilled to introduce our new animal sanctuary and vegan advocacy center, Freedom Farms! Join this lively conversation with In Defense of Animals President Marilyn Kroplick, MD, and key staff working to make this dream a reality.

Freedom Farms is located in central California on 44 acres of fields, forest, and a river. It was formerly a celebrity compound for Hollywood royalty; Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher. Freedom Farms is home to dozens of animals, some saved from slaughter. They include cows, equines, deer, ducks, and peacocks. They live happily and peacefully at the sanctuary, receiving love, care, and veterinary attention.

Our dream is for Freedom Farms to one day serve as a center for humane education, advocacy, and outreach.

It is an ideal place to come for workshops, retreats, and special events to create a compassionate world. We aim to offer tours, events, and volunteer opportunities. We are currently fixing up the existing structures on the property such as the barns, sheds, and houses.
