Danna Smith is the founder and executive director of Dogwood Alliance. For over 20 years, she has been at the forefront of forest protection in the U.S., leading hard-hitting campaigns and negotiating ground-breaking forest protection commitments from some of the largest companies in the world. She is a leading voice connecting the dots between climate change, forest destruction and social justice and pushing for forest protection in the U.S. at a scale necessary to meet the sustainability challenges of the 21st century. The ugly legacy of environmental injustice is a stain on our country’s values of fairness and opportunity. But sadly, one of the many reasons this problem persists can be found within the president’s own executive branch—the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The same week President Biden announced his new environmental justice executive order, senior USDA officials were overseas working to drum up business for the wood pellet industry, an industry under fire from frontline communities and environmental justice organizations from North Carolina to Mississippi.

Standing forests represent our best available technology for removing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it long-term. Meanwhile, the rate and scale of logging in U.S. forests for wood, paper and fuel, especially in the South, are among the highest in the world and have significantly contributed to the degradation of forests’ ability to stabilize our climate. Leaders, businesses, nonprofits and citizens need to accelerate actions to protect and restore our nation’s forests to help solve the climate crisis and protect our most vulnerable communities from the worst effects of climate change. Danna Smith is the founder and Executive Director of Dogwood Alliance, and for more than 20 years, she has been at the forefront of forest protection in the US, leading hard-hitting campaigns and negotiating ground-breaking forest protection commitments from some of the largest companies in the world. Danna is a leading voice challenging the status quo, connecting the dots between climate change, forest destruction and social justice and pushing for forest protection in the US at a scale necessary to meet the sustainability challenges of the 21st Century. She holds a law degree from Emory University.
