Lecture, Prof. Dr. Kaja Harter-Uibopuu: Between Cult and Control. Everyday life in sanctuaries in Hellenistic and imperial Greece and Asia Minor
In Hellenistic and imperial poleis, regulations from Greek sanctuaries made public in inscriptions – traditionally referred to in research as leges sacrae, more recently also as cultic norms– often regulated not the sacred but everyday administrative life. Using epigraphic examples from mainland Greece and Asia Minor, the lecture will demonstrate how officials monitored compliance with the codes of conduct for visitors to sanctuaries and participants in cult ceremonies, and what insights the legal texts can provide into the actual conduct of cult festivals.Key Speaker: Kaja Harter-Uibopuu
