The genus Theropithecus presents one of the most striking cases of convergent evolution with hominins in the primate order. The sole surviving species, the gelada (Theropithecus gelada), endemic to the Ethiopian Highlands, possesses the highest degree of thumb opposability of any non-human primate — a precision grip capability that, in functional terms, approaches that of Homo sapiens.
