Introduction

While the animals of Paleolithic caves are well-known, the geometric symbols that accompany them and a range of dots, line and other markings remain largely undeciphered. These signs are found globally and appear to be part of a sophisticated visual communication system that had long continuities across time. While many elements will never be understood, it's possible to reconstruct some of the knowledge and thought.
