What Was the Fate of the Roanoke, Virginia Colony?
We analyze genetic and archaeological evidence for the integration of the "Lost Colony" into local populations and examine records of the Little Ice Age.
Introduction

The 1590 disappearance of the Roanoke Colony remains a central mystery of early American history. New data from tree rings indicates the colony vanished during the most extreme drought the region had seen in 800 years. This environmental pressure likely led to subsistence shortages, forcing the settlers to seek refuge or integrate with nearby Indigenous tribes, such as the Roanoke-Hatteras people of Croatoan Island.
We analyze genetic and archaeological evidence for the integration of the "Lost Colony" with local populations and examine climatic records of the Little Ice Age. We are picking up the trails of evidence for a story of survival and bringing together the research on environmental stressors.
